Snapdragons are grown as annuals and thrive in the Spring and Fall. Although they prefer full sun to part shade, they struggle in the Summer heat, especially in Southern climates. Used in containers or mixed border gardens, snapdragons produce clusters of flowers on upright stalks. The plant name is derived from the flower head's resemblance to the snout of a dragon and appears to open and close it's mouth when pollinators reach for the pollen. Available in many bloom colors, including yellow, orange, pink and red, snapdragons perform best in well-drained soil and cool weather.
